Simvastatin (Zocor) and the FDA Information as of 6/14/2011

This last week the FDA announced that the 80mg dose was associated with a 0.9% risk of rhabdomyolysis (muscle inflammation).

The recommendation is:  If you have been on the 80mg dose for > 12 months and have no side-effects (severe muscle aching), it is safe to continue at that dose.

There are other statins (drugs in the simvastatin class) which can be used. These tend to be either more expensive or less effective. They all carry a lesser risk of rhabdomyolysis.

If you wish to change drugs or reduce the dosage, please make an appointment to discuss your options as this will be an individualized decision making process.
